I think I have reached that point in life where people just expect certain things from me, such as being married, having children, looking to buy my own house and so on. I guess I should feel disappointed that I have accomplished none of the above. However, I don't want any of the above for my life right now.
I find it rather annoying that so many people settle for what they "should" do in their lives as oppose to what they "want" in their lives. There are so many people my age that have absolutely no idea where they want their lives to go. Or maybe they do but they don't have to motivation, passion or drive to get there. It is not selfish to have dreams for yourself and do anything it takes to get there.
When a young couple tells me that they are engaged or having a baby it is all I can do to tell them "DON'T DO IT!!!" "LIVE YOUR LIFE FOR YOU!!!"
I guess there probably really are people who have no other aspirations but to be a stay at home mom, but for me that sounds like complete torture. I have no desire to have children, to give up my dreams to live a life that someone else thinks I "should" live. When I tell people I don't want children I always hear "you will change your mind" HEY PEOPLE, I'm 26. I have a mind of my own, I'm independent, and I know what I want. I want to be successful in my career. Many people don't understand what that means for me. They think it's just standing behind my chair and cutting some hair. No, that is not at all what I want! I want to be the best. I want to travel with PureOlogy to educate and inspire other hairstylists!
It is unfortunate that in 2011, part of society still sees a 26 year old woman as unsuccessful because she is not married and doesn't have kids. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I am not stuck in an unhappy marriage and that I am not raising children I am not ready to have. Call me crazy but there it is.... Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
